Vote-buying has emerged as a menace during elections in Nigeria, prompting attempts at curbing it.
The Osun State governorship is contested by 15 political parties but the battle for the number one citizen is widely expected to be majorly between the incumbent governor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Gboyega Oyetola and Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Other notable candidates are the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Lasun Yusuf of the Labour Party, Goke Omigbodun of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Akin Ogunbiyi of the Accord Party.
Oyetola became the governor of the State in 2018 after he polled 255,505 votes against Adeleke, who had 255,023 votes at the end of a supplementary election, was conducted in seven polling units across four local governments.
The election was declared inconclusive by the electoral umpire after the main election was deemed inconclusive. Adeleke polled 254,698 against Oyetola’s 254,345 in the main election.
A rerun became necessary as the margin between the PDP and APC candidates was less than the number of cancelled votes in seven polling units.
