The Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, has announced the suspension of rail service along the Warri-Itakpe rail line after a train derailed at kilometre 30 Ajaokuta-Itakpe section of the track.
This was contained in a statement issued by the coordinator, Warri-Itakpe train service, Sanni Abdulganiyu, on Sunday.
The development comes two weeks after gunmen stormed a train station in Edo state and kidnapped several passengers.
However, state authorities say most of those kidnapped have been rescued.
Abdulganiyu in the statement said the train derailed at about 12:30 pm with about 148 passengers and 30 crew members on board.
He added that “there were no fatalities nor casualties as a result of the derailment.
According to the coordinator, the corporation was able to immediately alert security personnel who were drafted to the accident scene.
