The All Progressives Congress has officially presented President Buhari as its sole candidate for the Presidential elections of 2019. Making this known, Maimala Buni, the National Secretary of the party also added that other interested candidates could still pick up the form if they so desire.
In his statement, he tried to explain how the President emerged the party’s sole Presidential candidate. He said “Once the National executive Committee NEC of the party passes a vote of confidence on the President, that President stands accepted because the NEC is the highest organ of the party and it met to take the decision, where every interest was represented so the National Executive Committee of the APC has passed a vote of confidence on our President and that means every APC member has endorsed him.”
He added that this was not a Nigerian thing as it was also practiced in other countries. He said “In advance democracy, once the NEC of a party passes vote of confidence on the President, nobody contests against the President. The President has been accepted.”
With this position, it is therefore not clear why he said members who wish to pick up the Presidential nomination form could do so. Unless of course it is simply a fund raising scheme. It will be recalled that the APC’s Presidential nomination form is about N45 million.
