President Bola Tinubu has made a significant decision by approving the immediate dissolution of the Governing Boards of all Federal Government parastatals, agencies, institutions, and government-owned companies. This move aims to bring about a restructuring and fresh approach in the governance of these entities.

The announcement came through a statement released on Monday by the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Willie Bassey. He clarified that the directive excludes boards, commissions, and councils listed in the third schedule, part one section 153 (i) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The exclusion means that agencies such as the Nigeria Judicial Council, Code of Conduct Bureau, Council of State, Federal Character Commission, Federal Civil Service Commission, Independent National Electoral Commission, National Population Commission, Police Service Commission, and Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission are unaffected by the dissolution.

According to the statement, during this transitional period, the Chief Executive Officers of the parastatals, agencies, institutions, and government-owned companies should refer any matters requiring the attention of their respective boards to the President. This should be done through the Permanent Secretaries of their supervisory ministries and offices.

To ensure smooth communication and adherence to the new directive, Bassey emphasized that Permanent Secretaries have been instructed to direct all correspondence to the President since the previous Friday.

The statement further indicated, “Permanent Secretaries are directed, also, to route such correspondences to Mr. President through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Consequently, all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies are to ensure compliance with the provision of this directive which took effect from Friday, June 16, 2023.”

In light of this directive, Permanent Secretaries have been specifically tasked with informing the Chief Executive Officers of the affected agencies under the supervision of their respective ministries or offices to ensure immediate compliance.

The dissolution of the Governing Boards reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to instituting changes and revamping the governance structure within the Federal Government parastatals, agencies, institutions, and government-owned companies. It remains to be seen how the restructuring process will unfold and what new developments will emerge in the future.
