The meeting between the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government scheduled to take place today has been cancelled.

The President of ASUU, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi said the time frame given to the union t consult its members was too short.

The development has dashed the hope of students who were hopeful that the meeting between the FG delegation and ASUU would bring an end to the nine months strike.

Reports say there is a deadlock in the negotiation of the payment of salary arrears of the lecturers. Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment had said that the government would only pay the withheld salary of ASUU members when they return to the classroom while ASUU is insisting is insisting that the backlog be paid.

Ngige said, “They were paid for February and March, after which it was extended to April, May and June, months they were on strike on compassionate ground, bringing it to five months.

“Asking the government to pay these four months before it goes back to work means ASUU is placing itself above the law of the land and no government will encourage it as it is a recipe for chaos in the labour milieu.”

African News Today could not obtain a new date for the meeting of ASUU and FG at the time of filling this report.
