ASUU Commences Nationwide Strike Over Unpaid June 2025 Salaries

Abuja, Nigeria – July 8, 2025 – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially launched a nationwide strike, halting academic activities across Nigeria’s federal universities due to the non-payment of June 2025 salaries. The strike, which began on Monday, July 7, follows a resolution by ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) enforcing its “No Pay, No Work” policy, mandating service withdrawal if salaries are delayed beyond three days into a new month.

ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, confirmed the action in Abuja, describing the salary delays as “deliberate and unacceptable” and attributing them to inefficiencies at the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation. Despite engagements with the Minister of Education and other officials, no resolution has been reached.

Branches at the University of Jos and the University of Abuja have already suspended lectures and statutory meetings, with strike monitoring teams activated to ensure compliance. Piwuna clarified that universities where salaries have been paid, including the University of Abuja as of July 7, are not on strike, but all unpaid branches remain off work.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged ASUU to reconsider, citing the adverse impact on students and noting reduced strikes under the current administration. ASUU, however, insists the strike will persist until outstanding salaries and N10 billion in Earned Academic Allowances are paid.
