In a recent development following the suspension of Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by the Federal Government on Tuesday, June 14, 2023, Mr. Abdulkarim Chukkol has been appointed as the Acting Chairman of the Commission.
Prior to assuming this new role, Mr. Chukkol served as the Director of Operations at the EFCC. With an impressive background, he is a pioneer staff of the Commission and a distinguished member of the EFCC Cadet Course One. Known for his expertise in cybercrime and money laundering investigations, Mr. Chukkol brings a wealth of experience to his new position.
Throughout his career at the EFCC, Mr. Chukkol has held significant command appointments within the organization. From 2011 to 2016, he served as the Head of the Advance Fee Fraud and Cybercrime Sections of the Lagos and Abuja Zonal Commands. In 2017, he became the pioneer Commander of the Uyo Zonal Command, and in 2020, he assumed the role of Commander of the Port Harcourt Zonal Command.
Mr. Chukkol has actively collaborated with international law enforcement organizations and fostered close relationships with agencies such as the FBI, UK National Crime Agency, United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), United States Secret Service, Australian Federal Police, Dutch Police, German Police, South African Police, and others. He has also played a crucial role in working with other governments to develop laws and infrastructure to support law enforcement actions. As Nigeria’s contact person at the International Mass Marketing Fraud Working Group, he represents key government regulatory, law enforcement, prosecution, immigration and customs, financial intelligence, and consumer protection agencies, as well as trade and competition bureaus dealing with mass marketing-related issues.

Mr. Chukkol has enriched his knowledge through attending various courses, seminars, and workshops on public corruption, advance fee fraud, and other economic and financial crimes both locally and internationally. Notably, he completed a program at Oxford University in the United Kingdom in 2022. His dedication and contributions to the field have garnered him numerous awards and commendations, including the “Most Outstanding Award in Operations” by the EFCC and the “Outstanding Performance Award” by the United States Department of Justice, among others.
Educationally, the acting EFCC Chairman holds a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Maiduguri (2000). He further pursued a Post Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice Education from the University of Virginia in the United States, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Cybersecurity and Spectrum Management from the United States Telecommunication Training Institute in Washington, DC. Additionally, he is an alumnus of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, the European Center of Security Studies in Germany, and a Fellow of the War College in Nigeria.
