The Egyptians playing with their star player, Salah were defeated 3:1 by hosts Russia. The first half of the encounter ended goal-less but things changed when in the 47th minute, The Egyptians conceded an own goal, opening the flood gate of goals.
Following the own goal in the 47th minute, Russia scored in the 59th minute through Cheryshev and again in the 3 minutes later through Dzyuba. Egypt got a consolation goal courtesy of a Salah penalty but this might not be enough to see them to the second round.
Though Egypt is not technically out, they will need Uruguay to lose to both Saudi Arabia and Russia, giving Russia the full 9 points, and each of the remaining teams 3 points each. The team with the best goals difference will then qualify as second.
